I LOVE POETRY.COM
I Love Poetry, Inc. was founded in 2001 by Chris Matsakis and Evan Adams as a community-based web site for poets and poetry lovers. "Being passionate about poetry ourselves, we felt there was a real void on the internet in terms of a place where people could have a forum for sharing their poetry with others. There's a tremendous community of folks out there who share a common interest in poetry but had no way to connect with each other. We set out to provide that," said Chris Matsakis.
Chris approached IWS in the fall of 2001, with the goal of producing a database-driven site wherein users could post poems, read poetry and interact as a community. The site had an existing database but ever-increasing traffic combined with a desire for more and more functionality meant that a longer-term solution was needed. "We were amazed by our own growth. We knew that there would be a demand but we underestimated just how much of a demand there truly was. As traffic was growing, we knew we had struck a chord with our audience and we knew we had to respond," said Chris.
IWS began the extensive task of rebuilding ilovepoetry.com, starting with a substantial overhaul of the database which stores user information, user-submitted poetry, poetry reviews and poetry rankings. In order to provide a flexible and lightweight front-end, IWS chose to migrate the site technology to a SQL database with ASP database calls to provide dynamic and user-controlled content. Additionally, new functionality such as extensive client database administration tools, greeting cards, a classical poetry section and advanced search features were included in a comprehensive site redesign which streamlined site navigation
I Love Poetry now has over 28,800 registered members and an archive of nearly 57,500 poems in three years of operation. The site continues to grow by leaps and bounds receiving well over 1,400 unique visitors per day. "IWS has done great work for us. Not only are they there for us in terms of on-going development and design but they have been extremely helpful as a sounding board for new ideas and in terms of taking our ideas and turning them into real functionality. All businesses need to surround themselves with organizations like IWS who have a wide breadth of experience to share," said Chris.
