GORTON COMMUNITY CENTER
Based in Lake Forest, IL, the Gorton Community Center is a non-profit organization providing space and services to more than 100 not-for-profit volunteer organizations and providing programs and activities to the community for children and adults. Headquartered in the historic Gorton School, built in 1907, the Gorton Community Center is one of only a few privately-funded community centers in the United States.
Integrated Web Solutions began working with Gail Hodges, director of the Gorton Community Center, in January of 2003, with the goal of producing a completely redesigned and database-driven site wherein users could browse though Gorton's wide variety of activities and programming. "We needed a site that reflected the true spirit of Gorton, we needed to show how vibrant a place it is due to our programming and activities. We also wanted to showcase the historical and nurturing nature of the building and environment. Gorton is really the hub of the community and our web site needed to convey that," said Gail.
IWS began the extensive task of rebuilding gortoncenter.org, starting with a significant design and content overhaul which had to account for a nearly 50% increase in web site content. A database and secure online registration for programming was needed as well. In order to provide a flexible and lightweight front-end, IWS chose to migrate the site technology to a SQL database with ASP database calls to provide dynamic and user-controlled content. Additionally, new functionality was created which would allow for Gorton staff members to maintain content on a consistent and cost-effective basis. IWS also provided Gorton with a real-time online reporting tool which showed who had signed up for various programs and activities.
Launched in March of 2003, the new Gorton Center web site currently receives over 28,000 page requests each month and over 65 program registrations within the first ten weeks of operation. Many of these program registrations have also been received with additional donation dollars. "We couldn't be happier with the new site. Not only are we getting new registrants for our programming but we're getting requests for room rentals and we're reaching a whole new audience. IWS went above and beyond for us and we are very appreciative of their guidance and willingness to help, " said Gail.
